Potato regeneration

Today we'll regenerate potato plants from parts of potatoes.

Did you know that for avoiding potatoes to grow little roots you have to put it in the same bag as an apple? Apples release etilen a substace which stops the roots growing.

But, today we will use potatoes from vegetative parts of the tuber so we need some that did not stay close to any apple. When are old, potatoes start to grow roots to regenerate themself. After using the potatoes for cooking, we can use part of the peelings to regenerate the entire plant.
You will need:
  • a grid or a net
  • a container to fill with water
  • old potatoes
Watch our video to discover how we did it.

As you can see, it's important that the potatoes are covered with a thin layer of water specially during the first days, until the roots grow. After the roots come out you don't have to worry about the lack of water because they can submerge in the water in the container underneath.

Also we could see how an opaque container could be better for growing taller plants.

We hope you like our potato project for gardening.

Homemade Compost

Today we'll make some compost.

Compost is good for plants. It's like food for them. It makes them grow better and healthier. Compost is the decomposition of organic waste where the vegetables and animals rests are transformed into fertilizer.

In the video we show you how to make a homemade compost bin using plastic bottles.

Compost can have different elements and each compost is different from others due to the elements that you put inside. Let's see what we can use to make it.

To make the compost we´ll need:                We can´t put:

organic rests                                                    inorgnic rests (such as plastic, metal, glass)
vegetable peels                                                bones, fish and meat
coffee wells                                                       liquids (such as milk, coffee, oil, alcohol)
egg shells                                                          dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese)
prunning remains, dry leaves                       battery

WARNIGS
  1. Take the leached away every day to avoid smells. You can dilute it in ten parts of water and use it to water your plants: it's rich in nutrients and microrganisms that helps your plants to grow.
  2. If you cut your vegetable waste in small pieces they will degradate sooner, and remember to cover with a thin layer of soil every day to avoid smells.
  3. Keep away from adding cooked food, fish waste or meat. the decomposition can cause smells that are unpleasent in a urban environment.
  4. You must steer clear of introducing infected plants in your compost, otherwise you could spread the pests into your garden.

It will take two or three months to mature and be an organic sustrate to mix with soil for your plants.

We hope that you liked our compost bin for a city balcony.

Planting germinated pepper seeds

Look at our video, please follow us. ♥️

In our gardening section, we´re going to plant some vegetables and aromatic herbs to create a garden for a balcony garden.

Today, we will show you how to plant some germinated pepper seeds for your little garden. In a previous entry of the blog, we showed you how to germinated them, and after one week they were ready to be planted in a pot (that we made decorating some plastic containers). Just the green pepper seeds have not germinated at the same time of the others. They needed one week more.

Please, for this activity use the following materials:

After a month they grew enough to be transplanted in planters in our mini garden.

We hope that you enjoyed our project.
